Yes, we are continuing our Not Just For Christmas series with tips and tricks for Father’s Day! Although fathers aren’t as décor savvy as their parenting counterparts (usually), they still deserve special gifts on their special day! Dad could use something to ‘light up’ his side of the bedroom, so we’d like to take you through the steps for a DIY table lamp specially designed with dad in mind. First of all, you need to choose a clear container. Choose something that fits your dad, such as an old wine bottle, a large beer mug, or a growler (from the local brewery). If you can’t think of anything that fits your dad’s style, any clear glass container will work (fish bowl, tall square vase, etc.). Carefully drill a hole near the bottom of one side large enough to slide string lights through. Next, you’re going to alternate layering ‘filler’ and string lights in your color of choice. As for the filler, choose something that suits dad’s likes! You could use golf balls & golf tees, scrap materials from ties, nuts & bolts, or anything small that reminds you of your dad (and fits through the opening of your chosen container). Put a layer (as thick or thin as you like) of filler, then a layer (or you could double layer) of lights and repeat until you get to the top of the container. Shadow boxes do not have to be feminine. A shadow box is a perfect Father’s Day gift for your dad! Choose a theme for your shadow box such as golf, baseball or fishing. One suggestion is to find a picture of you and dad performing his favorite activity together. You can then add small items associated with the activity around the picture. Maybe it’s fishing: choose a picture of you and dad fishing together and place in the center (taped to back of shadow box). Affix hooks, fake bait, lures, fishing line around the picture. Secure some battery operated lights around the inside perimeter of the shadow box, securing with electrical tape. Match the cord color to the color of the box and get electrical tape the same color so it all blends well. Now secure the back decorated in your theme to the shadow box and you have created a gift dad will never forget!
