DIY Ornament Decor

Continuing in our DIY blog series, let’s take a look at ornaments. We’ll explore how to make décor using ornaments and how to make some new ornaments using things you probably already have lying around your house. By the time you are finished with these projects, you’ll be a DIY holiday expert. Ornaments do not just belong on trees! An ornament chandelier would be a beautiful addition above your holiday dining table. All you’ll need for this project is ornaments – the fuller you want the chandelier, the more ornaments you’ll need – and some ribbon that matches. This will be more elegant if you stick with one or two colors, as more than that starts to look too busy to be elegant. Simply cut your ribbon in strips of varying lengths and tie one end to the top of the ornament (where it would normally hang on your tree). Once all your strips of ribbon are tied to an ornament, gather the other end of each ribbon to form a ‘chandelier’ of sorts with the dangling ornaments. Use one long one in the middle as a starting point, then a layer just above using three or four ornaments, and a third layer just above that using five or six ornaments. Continue layering the ornaments until you have your desired look. When you’ve arranged a full ‘chandelier’, staple the ribbon together at the top, secure to the ceiling using a clear thumb tack, and you have a beautiful chandelier for your holiday table. Adorn any window with ornaments. Simply tie fishing line to a handful of ornaments at different lengths. Secure the other end of the fishing line to a curtain rod in any window in your home. You can use as many or as few as you like to create your desired look. For a standard window, five or six ornaments would be plenty. You can stagger them in any design to create several different looks all around the house. Create a theme in each room - pink ornaments in a girl’s room or blue ornaments in a boy’s room – you can create any theme using color! Create beautiful place cards for seating at your holiday table, or labels for your holiday buffet using ornaments. All you will need is some ornaments, some washers, and some thin key rings. Most of these things can be found in junk drawers across America! Hot glue a washer to the bottom of an ornament so that the ornament will set stable. Next, secure a key ring through the top of the ornament. Making sure the double portion of the key ring is on top, hot glue to the ornament. Let the glue dry while you print your desired labels. Once the glue is completely dry, place the labels in the key ring and now you have beautiful labels for your buffet or place settings. Create a beautiful centerpiece for your holiday table using ornaments, pine cones, Epsom salts, and a glass vase. Pour Epsom salts in the bottom of the vase, mix ornaments and pine cones on top and you’ve created a gorgeous centerpiece. Make two or three using varying sizes of vases and your holiday table will turn into a stunning show piece! You can create ornaments for your tree using several things from around the house. Hot glue ribbon to the tops of cookie cutters to adorn your tree. Paint a copy of your first house key, add ribbon to the top with an address label secured to the ribbon and you have a memory of your first home together to hang on your tree. You can put a twist on the traditional candy cane ornament by wrapping them in twine to create a new look. Using Elmer’s glue or hot glue on wax paper, draw snowflakes. Add some glitter and when they dry, secure a ribbon on the back for beautiful sparkling snowflake ornaments. The possibilities are endless when it comes to making your own ornaments.
